Okay, so here are the facts. Everybody knows regular exercise improves your lungs, heart health and overall bodily functions. However, research shows that exercise can make you more intelligent, happier, and energetic. These positives also incentivise a healthier relationship with your work ethic. Here at IEDM, an outstanding work-life balance is essential to productivity. This is why we have created a work-life structure that encourages employees to prioritise their physical and mental health.
Combined with our four-day workweek, we incentivise employees by contributing a portion to any gym membership of their choosing. Be it Virgin Active, Planet Fitness or even a boxing club! With this in place, our team feels they can be in tip-top shape while working as efficiently as possible. Research shows that regular exercise boosts the brain’s ability to learn and retain information, which is beneficial for the workplace. We even have some team members brave enough to train and compete in triathlons, bicycle races such as the 94.7, and even something as extreme as skydiving!
However, a common misconception many people believe is that they need to do vigorous exercise to be healthy. As well as thinking that having a gym membership is the only way to exercise. These beliefs couldn’t be any further from the truth. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, getting at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity a week is more than enough to stay healthy. Notice how we say aerobic activity. This means any physical activity is a valid exercise. Simple walks around the block or even a home workout routine are great ways to stay healthy.
Exercise has been shown to improve productivity rates by a significant amount. Please bear with us for a second while we get technical here. Physical activity encourages the growth of new mitochondria within your cells, increasing your body’s capacity to make ATP over time. This increases your physical stamina and gives your brain more energy, which improves your mental performance. Therefore, to put it simply, exercise provides more power for the brain to work effectively!
So, in summary. Exercise is excellent for the body and mind. It increases the brain’s ability to learn and retain information and boosts one’s overall mood. IEDM believes in achieving a balance of fitness and a healthy lifestyle. Have questions regarding fitness in the workplace? Drop us a comment below.
